The Eleventh U.S. Census ~ 1890

The original copies of the Eleventh U.S. Census, taken in 1890, were destroyed in a fire that engulfed the Commerce Building, Washington, DC in January, 1921. The fire occurred prior to the microfilming of the returns; as a result, the 1890 returns, with the exception of only a few, were lost without any kind of backup.
