The Sixth U.S. Census ~ 1840

  As with the 1830 U.S. Census, the 1840 U.S. Census reflects the resident status as of the 1st of June, 1830.

      Information recorded on the 1840 U.S. Census:

     ¯ Name of the county and city, ward, township, parish or precinct.

     ¯ Name of head of family.

     ¯ Number of free white males and females in the following age groups:

               under 5 years,

               5 to 9 years,

               10 to 14 years,

               15 to 19 years,

               20 to 29 years,

               30 to 39 years,

               40 to 49 years,

               50 to 59 years,

               60 to 69 years,

               70 to 79 years,

               80 to 89 years,

               90 to 99 years,

               100 years and over.

     ¯ Number of male and female slaves and free colored persons in the

               following age groups:

               under 10 years,

               10 to 23 years,

               24 to 35 years,

               36 to 54 years,

               55 to 100 years,

               100 years and over.

     ¯ Number of white deaf and dumb persons.

     ¯ Number of white blind persons.

     ¯ Number of insane and/or idiotic persons.

     ¯ Number of white persons over the age of 20 who cannot read and write.

     ¯ Name and age of Revolutionary War pensioners.

     ¯ Number of persons employed in seven classes of occupations: (mining;

               agriculture; commerce; manufacturing and trade; navigation of the

               ocean; navigation of canals, lakes and rivers; learned professions

               and engineers).
