     The Province of New Hampshire was established in the 1620s and chartered as a crown colony in 1679. The Province of Massachusetts Bay was established in the 1620s and chartered as a crown colony in 1692. The Colony of Rhodes Island and Providence Plantation was established in 1636 and chartered as a crown colony in 1663. The Connecticut Colony, established in 1636, was chartered as a crown colony in 1662. The Province of New York was a proprietary colony that was established in 1664 and became a crown colony in 1686. The Province of New Jersey was established as a proprietary colony in 1664 and as a crown colony in 1702. The Province of Pennsylvania was a proprietary colony, established in 1681. The Lower Counties on Delaware was a proprietary colony established in 1664. The Province of Maryland was a proprietary colony established in 1632. The Colony and Dominion of Virginia was established as a proprietary colony in 1607, but changed to a crown colony in 1624. The Province of North Carolina and the Province of South Carolina were established as a single proprietary colony in 1663. They were divided and changed to crown colonies in 1729. The thirteenth British colony was the Province of Georgia, a proprietary colony established in 1732 and changed to a crown colony in 1752.


It should be noted that Maine, despite having been established in 1640, was considered to be part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.



Also, it might be noted that in 1676, the colony of New Jersey was divided into East Jersey and West Jersey. Despite being reunited in 1701, the region was generally known as 'the Jerseys'.
