Antique Watermarks

Source:   Le Siecle De Louis XIV, published in 1770

Above and below are three examples of wire watermarks, comprised of lettering and symbols, including a heart and a fleur-de-lis. The poor quality of the watermarks, coupled with the laid marks of the paper, make it impossible to accurately identify the words. The image shown above appears to be the word "AUVERGNE", followed by a couple indecipherable characters. The image shown below seems to indicate the letter "P", followed by a fleur-de-lis, and then followed by the word "BERGERES". It is possible that it represented a contemporary papermaker, but a search of French papermakers in the 18th Century did not produce a favorable result.
