Descendants of

Shaw (Mac~an~Toisich) *

Much of the information in this genealogy, from Shaw MacDuff (Mac~An~Toisich) to William Shaw, the emigrant progenitor of our family, was obtained from the book, A History Of Clan Shaw, by C.J. Shaw of Tordarroch. Additional information was obtained from the book, Genealogical Account Of The Highland Families, by Alexander Macintosh Shaw.

Generation No. 1

1. SHAW MACDUFF (MAC~AN~TOISICH)1 * {aka Seach MacDuff, Mac~an~Toschich, Mac~An~Toisigh, meaning Son of the Thane} It is from Shaw (Mac~An~Toisich), son of Duncan, the 5th Earl of Fife, that Clan Mackintosh began. Clan Mackintosh was one of the primary clans which formed the confederacy known as Clan Chattan, believed to have been instituted by Chief Gillechattan Mor, who was descended from Loarn Mor Mac Erc (see individual #1C1A1A1A1A1C1A1A1A1B1B4D1B1A1A1A7J1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1A1D in the preceeding genealogy of Descendants of Adam & Eve to Shaw Mac~An~Toisich). Clan Shaw would also be part of the Clan Chattan confederacy as a cadet of Clan Mackintosh. The Clan Chattan Bond of 1609 gives the principal members of the confederacy as: the Macintoshes, the Macphersons, the MacQueens, the MacBeans, the Macleans of Dochgarroch, the MacGillivrays, the Farquharsons, the MacPhails, the Shaw, and some lesser families including the Clarks, Gows, Gillanders and Davidsons. Seach/Shaw MacDuff married GILES DE MONTGOMERY a daughter of HUGH DE MONTGOMERY. He died in 1179. Shaw MacDuff died in the year 1179, and was succeeded as 'mackintosh' of Clan Mackintosh by his eldest son, Shaw.

Children of SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH) * and GILES DE MONTGOMERY are:

C. DUNCAN *, d. 1190.

Generation No. 2

1A. SHAW2 * {aka Shaw Oig} (SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1) Shaw Oig (i.e. the Younger) married MARY DE SANDYLANDS, a daughter of Sir HARRY DE SANDYLANDS. He died circa 1209-1210. (Note: Members of the Macintosh Clan attach the name Macintosh to all descendants of Shaw MacDuff by virtue of his title of the Mac~An~Toisich. Whether the succeeding generations used the title as a surname cannot be known with any certainty. In the absence of any records to confirm that practice, the names that follow will consist only of the given name.) Shaw was the 2nd Chief of Mackintosh. He died in 1210, and was succeeded by his eldest surviving son, Ferquhard. His firstborn son, Malcolm preceeded Shaw in death.

Children of SHAW * and MARY DE SANDYLANDS are:

SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS) * acquired the lands of Meikle and Geddes, the lands and castle of Rait on the river Nairn. He also acquired a lease of Rothiemurchus in Strathsprey from Andrew, Bishop of Moray in 1236. Shaw (of Rothiemurchus) was named 4th Chief of Mackintosh upon the death of his uncle, Ferquhard in 1240. Shaw (of Rothiemurchus) died in 1265.

FERQUHARD * fought in Battle of Largs 1263. Ferquhard, who was then 5th Chief of Mackintosh, witnessed a charter of the Bishop of Moray in 1234. He also held the key office of Seneschal of Badenoch under its first Cummin lord. During the life and chiefship of Ferquhard, the lands of Meikle, Geddes and Rait were taken from the Mackintosh clan by the Comyns, Lords of Badenoch; it would not return to Mackintosh hands until a hundred years later. ANGUS * was a Captain for Randolph at Battle Of Bannockburn 1314. Eva was an heiress of Clan Chattan, being descended from Gillechattan Mor, the founder of Clan Chattan. Gillechattan Mor had a son, Dougal Dall, aka Gillipatrick, who was Eva's father. Gillechattan Mor was descended from the Dal Riadan King Loarn Mor Mac Erc through his son, Ferchar the Long. Angus held the title of 6th Chief of Mackintosh; he also acquired the title of 7th Chief of Clan Chattan upon the death of Dougal Dall, Eva's father. Angus and Eva moved from Lochaber to Rothiemurchus about 1308 following the overthrow of the Comyns at Inverness by the forces of Robert the Bruce. Angus died in 1345.

Children of ANGUS * and EVA * are:

Generation No. 7

1A3A1A2. IAN7 * {aka John} (ANGUS6, FERQUHARD5, SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS)4, WILLIAM3, SHAW2, SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1) Ian, known variously as John mac Angus, is the person in whom the Clan Shaw diverged from the Clan Mackintosh. He is believed to have fought at the Battle of Bannockburn and possibly alongside his brothers at Durham. Ian / John is acknowledged as having been the 1st Chief of Clan Shaw.

Child of IAN * is:

A. GILCHRIST8 *.

Generation No. 8

1A3A1A2A. GILCHRIST8 * {aka Gilchrist mac Ian, Christi-Johnson} (IAN7, ANGUS6, FERQUHARD5, SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS)4, WILLIAM3, SHAW2, SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1). Gilchrist succeeded his father as the 2nd Chief of Clan Shaw.

Child of GILCHRIST * is:

1. SHAW MOR CORIACALICH9 *.

Generation No. 9

1A3A1A2A1. SHAW MOR CORIACALICH9 * {aka Sheath Mor Sgorfhiaclach ~ the bucktoothed, Shaw Mor Macintosh, Shaw Mhor, Shaw MacGilchrist} (GILCHRIST8, IAN7, ANGUS6, FERQUHARD5, SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS)4, WILLIAM3, SHAW2, SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1) SHAW MOR CORIACALICH *, 3rd Chief of Clan Shaw, was temporarily serving as the Chief of Mackintosh and therefore was chosen as the Captain of the Thirty at Battle of the North Inch at Perth in 1396. Tradition holds that Shaw Mor Corliacalich led the Clan Chattan (aka Clahynnhe Qwhewyl) to victory in that battle of the clans. In that fight he led the thirty best fighting men in Clan Chattan against thirty warriors of Clan Hay (aka Clan Cameron). When the fight was finally stopped, only one of the men of Clan Hay was left standing, facing Shaw Mor and nine of his Clan Chattan warriors. As a reward, he was given the lands of Rothiemurchus, site of the castle Loch-an-Eilean. (Those lands were sold in 1539 by Alastair Kiar's grandson, Alan to George Gordon, the Earl of Huntly. Huntly sold it to Dallas of Cantry, who in turn sold it to Grant of Freuchie.) When, in 1409, Ferquhard, son of Lachlan, the 8th Chief of Mackintosh, willingly abdicated the chiefship of Clan Mackintosh, Shaw Mor Coriacalich assumed the position temporarily. It is Shaw Mor Coriacalich, who is credited with founding the "Shaws" as a clan, despite the fact that it was his grandfather, Ian/John who was the first of the direct line of the family that would be known as Shaws. He is believed to have married the daughter of Robert MacAlister vic Innish, who was an ancestor of the Clan MacPherson (of Clunie), by whom he had seven sons. The only one that is confirmed is James. Shaw Mor Coriacalich died in 1405 and was buried in the churchyard of St. Tuchaldus, near the Doune beside the river Spey in the parish of Rothiemurchus.

Child of SHAW MOR CORIACALICH * is:

A. JAMES10 SHAW.

Generation No. 10

1A3A1A2A1A. JAMES SHAW10 {aka Seamus, James Mackintosh} (SHAW MOR CORIACALICH9 *, GILCHRIST8, IAN7, ANGUS6, FERQUHARD5, SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS)4, WILLIAM3, SHAW2, SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1) James Shaw was the 4th Chief of Clan Shaw. He married ELIZABETH LE GRANT, Lady of Stratherrick, granddaughter of Patrick Grant, Lord of Stratherrick and Inverallan. James Shaw was killed at the Battle of Harlaw on 24 July, 1411, fighting on the side of Donald, 2nd Lord of the Isles. It should be noted here that I have placed the surname of Shaw here, and on the succeeding generations, because of the clan's acknowledgement of Shaw Mor Coriacalich as the progenitor of the clan. But the name was not employed as a surname in the public records until the 1700s. According to the Kinrara Manuscript (by Lachlan Mackintosh of Kinrara, circa 1679), the name of James who served and died at Harlaw was given as James Mackintosh.

Child of JAMES SHAW and ----- INVERETTIE is:

1. ALASTAIR11 KIAR/SHAW. b. 1400-1405.

2. ADAM SHAW. Adam, or Ay, of Tordarroch was the progenitor of the Clan Ay, or the Shaws of Tordarroch. It was the Shaws of Tordarroch who supported Montrose and raised the Shaw contingent in the Jacobite rising of 1715.

3. JAMES. Died young.

4. MATILDA. Married to Ranald MacAllister vic Innish.

Generation No. 11

1A3A1A2A1A1. ALASTAIR KIAR/SHAW11 {aka Allister Ciar, Alister the fen, Alexander, the Brown, Allister Kier Mackintosh, Alexander Keyr Makyntosy} (JAMES10 SHAW, SHAW MOR CORIACALICH9 *, GILCHRIST8, IAN7, ANGUS6, FERQUHARD5, SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS)4, WILLIAM3, SHAW2, SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1) Alastair Kiar/Shaw was the 5th Chief of Clan Shaw. He married ----- STUART, a daughter of Stewart of Kinkardine. Alastair Kiar/Shaw died prior to 1497/8.

Children of ALASTAIR KIAR/SHAW and ----- STUART are:

A. JAMES SHAW (OF12 DALNAVERT). (Progenitor of the Shaws of Dalnavert)

B. JOHN SHAW. (aka Ian, John Keir Mackintosh)

C. ALISTER OIG SHAW. (aka Alexander, progenitor of the Shaws of Dell.)

D. FARQUHAR SHAW. (Progenitor of the Clan Farquharson of Mar.)

E. IVOR SHAW. (aka Evander. Progenitor of the Shaws of Harris and the Isles.)

Generation No. 12

1A3A1A2A1A1A. JAMES SHAW (OF DALNAVERT)12 {aka James MacAlasdair Ciar} (ALASTAIR11 KIAR/SHAW, JAMES10 SHAW, SHAW MOR CORIACALICH9 *, GILCHRIST8, IAN7, ANGUS6, FERQUHARD5, SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS)4, WILLIAM3, SHAW2, SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1) Dalnavert lay on the edge of the Inshriach Forest near the River Spey. It was the Shaws of Dalnavert who began to use the name Shaw as a surname; the first public record of its use as a surname was by Alexander Shaw of Dalnavert in 1620. The name has never been used as a surname in conjunction with the prefix, Mac. The addition of the prefix would make the name mean, "son of Shaw". Instead, the title/name Na Si'aich, which meant "the Shaws" was sometimes used as a surname.

Child of JAMES SHAW (OF DALNAVERT) is:

1. ALEXANDER13 SHAW.

2. DONALD ROY SHAW. Donald married Mary, daughter of Donald Dow MacPherson of Pitchern. Donald Roy Shaw died prior to 16 August, 1632.

1A3A1A2A1A1B. JOHN SHAW12 {aka Ian Keir, John Keir Mackintosh} (ALASTAIR11 KIAR/SHAW, JAMES10 SHAW, SHAW MOR CORIACALICH9 *, GILCHRIST8, IAN7, ANGUS6, FERQUHARD5, SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS)4, WILLIAM3, SHAW2, SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1). John Shaw succeeded to the position of 6th Chief of Mackintosh upon the death of his father, Alastair Kiar. He married Euphemia * (aka Euffin), daughter of Alan, third son of Malcolm Beg. John died between 17 July, 1520 and 14 August, 1521.

Children of JOHN SHAW and Euphemia * are:

1. ALAN13 SHAW.

2. THOMAS SHAW.

3. BEAN SHAW.

Generation No. 13

1A3A1A2A1A1A1. ALEXANDER SHAW13 (JAMES SHAW (OF12 DALNAVERT), ALASTAIR11 KIAR/SHAW, JAMES10 SHAW, SHAW MOR CORIACALICH9 *, GILCHRIST8, IAN7, ANGUS6, FERQUHARD5, SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS)4, WILLIAM3, SHAW2, SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1) This generation individual is probably Alexander Shaw of Dalnavert, but the available records do not provide exact proof. Alexander Shaw was the first of the family in Dalnavert to actually use the name Shaw as a surname. Because the early manuscripts state that James was the progenitor of the Shaws of Dalnavert, (i.e. the Kinrara MS stated that from James, son of Alasdair Ciar Mackintosh of Rothiemurchus, descended directly the Shaws of Dalnavert), the assumption can be made that Alexander, the first to use the surname, was James' son. Alexander's will, which was confirmed on 15 November, 1631, mentioned his brother, Donald Roy Shaw. Alexander Shaw married ----- *, a daughter of William MacPherson of Bialid.

Children of ALEXANDER SHAW and ----- MACPHERSON* are:

A. WILLIAM14 SHAW, SR, d. Drogheda.

B. DONALD SHAW.

1A3A1A2A1A1B1. ALAN KEYR MAC IAIN13 {aka Alan Shaw, Alan Mackintosh} (JOHN SHAW, ALASTAIR11 KIAR/SHAW, JAMES10 SHAW, SHAW MOR CORIACALICH9 *, GILCHRIST8, IAN7, ANGUS6, FERQUHARD5, SHAW (OF ROTHIEMURCHUS)4, WILLIAM3, SHAW2, SHAW MACDUFF (MAC-AN-TOISICH)1) Alan Keyr Mac Iain succeeded to the position of 7th Chief of Mackintosh. He married -----*, a daughter of Ferquhard, 12th Chief of Mackintosh. Alan died between November, 1539 and December, 1542.

Child of ALAN KEYR MAC IAIAN is:

A. JAMES14 KEIR SHAW of Doune of Rothiemurchus. (aka James Keir Mackintosh)

Alexander Shaw of Dalnavert's son, William Shaw was known to have taken up arms, along with other Shaws, Mackintoshes and MacPhersons, against Montrose. He was summoned by the Synod of Moray on 12/13 January, 1648 for such action but was noted as 'being absent without excuse.' Shortly thereafter, a William Shaw appeared in Ireland. It is therefore believed that William, son of Alexander Shaw, and the William Shaw in Ireland were one and the same person. According to tradition, William Shaw, Sr left Dalnavert and traveled to England where he joined Colonel John Ponsonby's Regiment of Horse, of Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentary Army in 1649, and served with that regiment in Ireland.
