Bucket Yoke

In the days when a housewife had to carry buckets of water from a stream or from a well (or milk from the barn) that was a distance from the house, she would use a bucket yoke to make the job easier. The yoke would fit over the shoulders, behind the head. Then the housewife would lift two buckets of water (or milk, or whatever) onto the two ends. By distributing the weight over the broad of her shoulders, the housewife could easily carry the heavy weight that would otherwise hurt her arms and back.
