Squat Wine Bottle     Exhibit 1

     The Squat Wine bottle got its name from its distinctive shape; it appears to be squatting with its large bulbous base with a thin, tapered neck. It is also sometimes refered to as an onion bottle, again because of its shape.

     These squat wine bottles were produced by hand and the image below shows the pontil mark left by the glassblower. The image above shows a thin piece of glass wrapped around the mouth of the bottle to form a "lip".
