The Written And Printed Word

THE HOLY BIBLE

Mark Baskett, 1763
{Width: 8"; Height: 9-7/8"; Thickness: 3-1/4"}

     The complete title of this book is: THE HOLY BIBLE, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues: And with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, By His Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. This Bible consists of the King James Version.
      The book was printed at London by Mark Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty; and by the Assigns of Robert Baskett. This volume has been beautifully rebound in recent years in full calf leather. The book is in extremely fine condition with only a couple pages missing at the very end. They would have contained tables of weights and measures.
      A page inserted in front of the formal frontispiece states: The Historical Part of the Holy Bible or the Old and New Testament Exactly and Completely Describ'd in above Two Hundred Historys Curiously Engrav’d by J. Cole from designs of ye best Masters. A number of those Curiously Engrav'd "Historys" are reproduced below.
      The Bible was owned by the Bloomfield family of Philadelphia. Genealogical information for the family is written on various pages throughout the book. It is curious that, despite the fact that there were a number of pages set aside for genealogical notes, they were not used. Instead, the notes were written on the backs of pages of engravings and in the blank spaces of the frontispiece and chapter title pages. On both, the Old Testament and New Testament frontispieces is written: "Sarah Bloomfield Her Book".
