The Holidays Celebrated In Colonial America

St. Blaze's Day

{ The 3rd of February }

  This was a day for women to put aside their housework and enjoy themselves. On this day, women would go through their villages knocking on their neighbors' doors and searching out some other housewife who might be busy spinning thread. If any were found, the searchers would set fire to the flax or wool on the distaff ~ hence the name of St. Blaze.
