7) James Muirhead ~ 1st Janet Hamilton

{Nisbet p 265} This JAMES MUIRHEAD, the younger of Lachop, married Janet...by whom he had a Son, the Heir of the Family, viz. JAMES MUIRHEAD of Lachop, who being linked in Friendƒhip, Blood and Affinity with the Hamiltons, did ƒtick firm to Queen Mary, when ƒhe fell in her Troubles;...In this Act there are a long Roll of Perƒons, who had been engaged in the Rebellion againƒt the young King, who are all now remitted and reƒtored; and among the reƒt this Gentleman, James Muirhead of Lachop (c), was one. He married Janet Hamilton, Daughter of James Hamilton of Bothwelhaugh, who was a Brother of the Houƒe of Orbiƒtoun (d)...

(Nisbet’s note #c) Memoirs of the Affairs of Scotland, Page 287, by Mr. David Crawfurd younger of Drumƒuey, publiƒhed in the Year 1706.

(Nisbet’s note #d) The Berbrief of the Gentlemen of the Houƒe of Lachop, in the Regiƒters in the Chancery. (Note: Alexander Nisbet did not acknowledge James Muirhead’s second wife, Margaret Cunninghame.)

Taking into account an entry in the Register of Deeds dated January 1587 regarding James Muirhead and his spouse, Margaret Cunninghame, it can be assumed that his first wife, Janet Hamilton, would have been deceased circa 1586.

7) James Muirhead ~ 2nd Jonet Aikenheid

{Research performed by Diane Baptie, Member of ASGRA 2002} The will of Margaret (Cunninghame) Muirhead, the second wife of James Muirhead of Lachop, which was included as an entry in the Register of the Privy Council RPC, Volume VI, no. 565, named Arthur Muirhead as a ‘natural’ son of James and Jonet Aikenheid.

In the absence of birth and death dates for Jonet Aikenheid, and also for her son, Arthur, there is no way to determine which number of the wives of James Muirhead she would have been. It might be assumed, though, that since the reference appears in Margaret's will, then James and Jonet's union, which resulted in the child, Arthur, must have taken place prior to James and Margaret's union.

7) James Muirhead ~ 3rd Margaret Cunninghame

{Morehead p 8} Margaret (Cunninghame), the wife of James Muirhead of Lauchope, died March 21 1596, and according to her will he became executor.

{Research performed by Diane Baptie, Member of ASGRA 2002} Testaments in Edinburgh Commissary Court include an entry for Margaret Cunnigham ‘sometime spouse to James Muirhead of Lauchop - 30 June 1598.

(Note: John M. Morehead did not acknowledge James Muirhead’s first wife, Janet Hamilton.)
