This page includes a transcription from the published Pennsylvania Archives (1897 Edition, Third Series, Volume XXII, Pages 149-151) of the 1776 tax assessment return for Hopewell Township, within Bedford County. The original return for Hopewell Township no longer is in existence in the archives maintained in Bedford County. The transcription is for the Residents. It should be noted that the listing of Residents presented in the published Pennsylvania Archives does not differentiate between the Residents and the Inmates of Hopewell Township for the year 1776. But a comparison with the previous year shows that certain of the names included at the end of this listing of Residents were actually Inmates during the previous year. An assumption might be made that the names starting with "Richard Plummer" and ending with "Hugh Guthery" should be designated as Inmates.
