1775 Bedford Township

Tax Assessment ~ Part 4
Renters

This page includes a transcription from the published Pennsylvania Archives (1897 Edition, Third Series, Volume XXII, Pages 92-96) of the 1775 tax assessment return for Bedford Township, within Bedford County. The original return for Bedford Township no longer is in existence in the archives maintained in Bedford County. The transcription is for the Renters.

It should be noted that this category of Renter is one that is not normally found in early tax assessment returns if the category of Inmate is also present. Individuals who were classified as Inmates were defined, in the Eighteenth Century, as "taxpaying renters". They were individuals who had moved into a region and did not own property yet. As a result, they rented a house, and perhaps some acreage of land from a Resident. Because, for all intents and purposes, the individuals displayed their intentions to become Residents, they were taxed. I have not been able to find a sufficiently descriptive definition of a Renter, as different from an Inmate, but perhaps the nuance between the two existed in the amount of property they rented, or some other, similar criteria.
